A Coffee Shop, The Birthplace, DC and Time to Go

Our first adventure in Virginia was going to Camping World to get a new 50-amp electric cable for our RV (check the last post to see why). But first breakfast,  we went to Colonial Buzz, a local coffee shop that opens until noon.   The place was small and cozy, and the front ladies were super nice to us, including to our doggy Zowie, they gave her a treat, and Zowie loved the place too. We have coffee with a delicious warm flaky ham and cheese pastry that we had to take to go because we have an hour drive to Camping World. The front ladies invited us to their Tuesday wine night from 4 to 7, unfortunately, we couldn’t go. The rest of the day wasn’t that exciting, we bought the cable and went home.

The next day we went history hunting, we went to George Washington’s Birthplace in the morning, it was only 11 minutes away from our campground, and in the afternoon we went to DC… which we did not enjoy that much. (Read until the end.)

We enjoyed the possible place where George Washington was born, the place is beautiful and also it was a beautiful day, sunny and clear skies. We took a tour, and we learned that the place is a representation of the possible place where he was born, but there is no evidence that he was born there, the property belongs to his family which is the only evidence. The house is a replica of the type of house that they had in those times but was not the house he lived in.

In the afternoon we headed to Washington DC which was like an hour away. Thank God we have been there before, and our experience has always been great. Before, we flew to DC stayed in hotels, and moved through the city walking and with the subway system. But this time we drove to the city in our long bed, Ram 3500… What a nightmare! We didn’t fit anywhere. We circled the city over and over trying to find parking, and finally, we found one, it was already 3:30 pm. To be honest we were tired and with no mood to walk around. The city was full, with many cars, and people and we lost so much time driving around, that we just wanted to leave. But after driving for an hour and circling the city for more than 30 minutes we had to stay at least for a little bit.

Jorge wanted to go to the National Air and Space Museum, well we couldn’t because it was full, the line to get in was as long as the one you make to get in a concert. We have been here before, and this is the first time we have seen this craziness. We were just bored at this point; we didn’t want to walk or do anything. We decided to just sit on a bench at the National Mall and Memorial Park to rest and read.  I took a few pics just to say we were there, Jorge read a little bit.

Something funny about this is that we were looking for a place to sit and relax, well we moved around to different benches, we sat in the grass, under a tree all because every time we try to settle and “relax” a whole family sat by us with many kids running around, yelling and more, then in another spot a bunch of friends decides to sit by us, talking and laughing loud… There is nothing wrong with any of this, but we wanted to have some quiet time, and everything was annoying to us LOL.

To finish our day on a magnificent high note, when we went back to the truck, we found a ticket for $100.00. Apparently the parking was until a certain time but we were so eager to find a parking lot, that we paid for it but didn’t read the restrictions. Yep! What a great afternoon!

Our next adventure was in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, but that is for our next post.

  1. Bummer about the ticket! Super common, tho – that’s how they make their money I swear. The parking in the District is crazy! We had a small car to use whenever we had to drive downtown since park spaces on the street and in the garages are TIGHT! Even too small for our Pilot in many places!

    1. Hello Kirsten! It was horrible finding parking in our 3500 long bed Ram! What a nightmare, and then on top of that the ticket. Oh well, it makes a good story, right? Hope you are doing good!
