Virginia, Virginia

Before we travel, I prepare our trips in advance. I knew how many hours would take us, I planned our gas stops for every two hours, and I even planned exactly the gas stations we would stop by. We tried to arrive at the RV park during daylight (not difficult because it was still summer) and when the office was still open. For this four-month trip, I scheduled the trip days for no more than five hours of travel.

The day we left North Carolina, we left a little late, like around noon time. Still, we were supposed to arrive around 4:30 pm, we arrived around 4:45 pm. The campground, Harbor View closes their office at 5 pm even during summer times, so we rushed, checked in, and went to our spot, by the way a beautiful pull-through, very spacious.

We started our normal routine of settling on our lot, one of the first things that Jorge does after we park is to connect the electricity and water, that way I can open the slides and start putting things in place inside our little home while he sets the outside stuff. Well, when I tried to open the slides (we have 4 of them), I couldn’t, there was not enough electricity to open the slides. Jorge started troubleshooting all the possible problems, he found out that the end part of our electricity cable, the part that gets plugged in at the electrical source was burned and melted. Without this, we can’t have electricity.

Not a good thing.

Sometimes RV parks have a small store with basic RV supplies, so we went to the office, but it was closed. We knocked at the glass door and the front lady came to tell us that the office was closed. We told her our problem, that we needed a 50-amp cable because ours was fried. We ask her If they sell any. Well, the small store did not carry that, but not only that, Camping World was an hour away and the small local RV places were closed already. At this point, it was 5:30 pm, and the front lady gave us a few RV technician’s numbers to call and see if anyone worked late or were willing to come to our remote area.

I looked up nearby hotels just in case because we were in the middle of summer, super-hot to spend the night in the RV with no electricity, while Jorge started calling RV technicians. He talked to one technician who told him about a quick fix for the night. I can’t explain the details and unfortunately, I did not record or take pictures of the “MacGyver Frankenstein” cable creation. The only thing I know is that Jorge cut the head of our electric surge protector and put it together with the RV electrical cord. After we got the “MacGyver Frankenstein” cable creation complete Jorge connected it to the electrical box and just like that we had electricity.  When we finally had electricity, we were able to finish preparing our little house for the night.  We were exhausted but we slept with air conditioning! Jorge put one of our outdoor cameras by the electrical box to check “MacGyver Frankenstein” cable during the night. Thank God the cable worked like a charm through the night but the next day, after breakfast we headed to Camping World to buy a new 50-amp cable.

Well, that was the first hiccup of our trip, we have a few more later on. In the next blog, I will talk about the places we visited on our four days in Virginia (besides Camping World).
