Walking Around Seward, Alaska

This is a simple story. Is the story about a travelers dream visiting for the first time Seward, Alaska. If you haven’t been in Seward, or any place in Alaska you might want to tag alone with me here. I don’t mind see places through other people’s  eyes, if I haven’t had the chance to visit the place yet. I invite you to see Alaska through my eyes, my emotions and memories.  There is one thing I want to tell you before we start our walk through Alaska, one of the reasons for us ( my husband and I) to do our vacation here is because of the wild life. I love the outdoors and enjoy very much watching all kind of wildlife but to be more specific I came on a quest to see whales… Humpback whales. Since I was in my early twenties, when I was doing my bachelor degree in biology I wanted to continue my studies in marine biology to specify on whales. But life took another turn on me and my marine mammals biology degree didn’t happened (just plain biology). Instead I become a mom and things went to a different direction for me. Since then is been in my bucket list to at least go whale watching and finally I thought this was my chance to do it, in Alaska.

The hotel was simple, there was nothing luxurious about it. Our room was clean and cozy with no AC.   Everybody was telling us that the weather was a little more warmer on those days, we could tell from the warm on the room.  But who cares with the views you can see just by stepping out of the door, the beauty and the luxuries were outside. I live in Florida and everything is flat, swampy, humid and hot, not so attractive to me, so I was in heaven.

Down the street there is an RV camp area. Oh the simple life! Seen all the campers reminded me that I want this kind of life too. Having the encounter with the RV campers helped me on my process of convicting my husband that we should try RV on our future.

Walking down the street to the right is the RV camp, to the front of us is the bay and mountains and to the left is the marine town of Seward. We didn’t go to downtown Seward, it was like 6 miles away. For what we heard there is another RV camp over there too.

Continuing our walk and with a little bit of hunger we went to explore the restaurants and business they had. After studying the menus of some of  their  restaurants we decide to eat at Ray’s Waterfront Restaurant. They  had a great selection of items to eat and offered us a magnificent view of the bay. Our server, Arturo (Art) told us quite few interesting things about Seward. He told us that during the summer in Seward is very busy, lots of RVs, fishing aficionados, wildlife and outdoors lover go there to enjoy all that Alaska have to offer. Because is so busy most of jobs are seasonal, once the summer is over, so do the jobs. We were there during the last two days of August, and the summer was basically over. We were one of the few tourist around that week. Even our server was working there seasonal, he have few more weeks to work and then he will return to his home. He works in two restaurants, one in the mornings and at Ray’s in the afternoon, he told us the money is good and that will help him to save some money.

People fishing

After we left Ray’s Waterfront Restaurant we walked back the way we came and looked with more details the main street and the surroundings. Check the video below and you will see Ray’s restaurant.

We stopped at the Harbors Creamery, even the afternoon was getting a little chilly we ate a yummy ice cream. Like us some people from the town make the same decision and came for ice cream too. It was nice feeling like one of the town people.  I couldn’t believe the feeling of not been in a hurry for something. I felt so careless about the time, I didn’t care how long we were there sitting observing people and the only street that we had to walk to get back to our hotel. And definitely I didn’t mind looking to the mountains over and over again wondering when was going to be my first wildlife encounter.

Then we walked down the street to the Seward Mariners Memorial where one of the locals told us that we can see sea otters form the shore. She told us that there is a family of about seven of them been cute over there, so we went. Like I mention before the ambience is so relax and peacefull that we could stay there just admiring the view.

So I was there, trying to capture all that beauty with my camera. Looking to see if I could find the sea otters, looking through my lens the details of the mountains. Admiring the frozen snow sitting on on top of the mountains and slinging down trying to touch the ocean. While I was there all romantic with nature, Jorge took a seat on a rock and played with his cellphone (Facebook…)

My first encounter with wild-life! I found one of the otters, actually I think there were two of them around but I couldn’t tell for sure.

Come and see few more details of our walked in Seward…

Now before we went back to our room and called it for the day, we took a little video of our surroundings. This way you  have a perspective of a moving environment, not only of still pics.

It was like 9:00 pm and  the colors of the day were vanishing little by little bit.  We were exhausted! We walked to our hotel that was like five minutes away. Even though was a little chilly outside, our room was mild, perfect for me but not so perfect for Jorge that likes a room like a freezer to be able to sleep.  The fatigue was stronger than the temperature issues, soon we fell sleep. Next day we woke up at 5 am ready for our first Alaska water adventure, but that’s another story.

Until then, stay tune for Kenai Fjord Experience!

The Best Part Of My Beach Day

One of the thing that I love the most beside traveling is going to the beach. I have the privilege to live in Central Florida, where I have beach to the east and west of me. Normally we go to the beach on the east coast because is a little bit closer from us, than the west. But to be honest I like the beaches from the Gulf of Mexico better. This weekend we decided to have a beach weekend. Today (Sunday) is our third day in a row coming to St. Petersburg beach. We absolutely loved it. The water is clear and warm but still refreshing. Not that many waves like in the east coast.

If you know me at least a little bit, you will know that I love to take pictures, and lately I enjoy taking pictures of birds. What a great combination of a relaxing day at the beach and take pictures of sea birds!
All the pictures above were from Friday afternoon. That afternoon I noticed a bird that I haven’t seen before. It flew close to shore and to the water. I notice that it was flying so close to the water that the lower part of its beak was touching the water. I got curious and wanted to take a picture but it was impossible, it flew so fast.
Well, we decided to go back to the beach The next day and guessed what?

You see that bird ⬆️ flying there? It became my obsession for the afternoon on Saturday. You don’t have any idea how many photos I took or better said how many attempted pics I did trying to capture these birds. The flew in pairs. Two of them pass by us many times during the afternoon.

After so many tries, I got this two pictures ⬆️⬆️ that I absolutely loved. I love the pictures now, but at the beach with the sun glare it was difficult for me to see how good the pictures were on my camera. So I wanted more, I wanted to have a close up of the birds, I was certain that I have never seen these birds before.
After many attempts I start making a little prayer on my head “Please God order one of these beautiful creatures to stop by for a few minutes for me to be able to take a pic…” “Pretty please my dear Father” “Creator and owner of everything that breath.” And mentally I was doing a pretty please face to God. But nothing happened.
I was sitting on my beach chair on my own business when my husband said to me: “Hurry come here now!” And I looked at him with a puzzle face like what? He said: hurry, hurry, look! So I stand quickly, left everything on the chair, took my camera and there it was…
Just standing there, taking a break of the so many loops that it have been doing during the whole afternoon. I couldn’t believe my eyes.THE CHERRY ON TOP of my day! Thank you Father God! 😉

This cutie is a Black Skimmer, these birds have a unique way of feeding and are the only birds in America that feeds the way they do. They “skim” the water with their lower bill while flying closely to the water until they catch small fishes and/or crustaceans, when they feel something they snaps their bill to keep their prey. The Black Skimmers are the largest of the three skimmers families. There are also African Skimmers and Indian Skimmer.
Well that’s all my story!
Until then,

Weekly Photo Challenge: Cherry on Top

It was the first time, and it wouldn’t be the last.

It was the fist time in my life that I traveled, I was 18 years old and it wouldn’t be the last. Twenty five years later I can testify that, that trip to Disney World wasn’t my last.

Back then, I lived in Puerto Rico and I had never traveled before. I used to dream about Disney World, it was like a fantasy to me. The whole concept of traveling to the US it was like a dream. I never imagine back then that eight years later I was going to be living permanently in Orlando Florida. If I never imagine that, less I imagine that I was going to be working everyday on Disney property. Back then was a dream, this day is my every day life thing.
It was my first time traveling and it was my first time at Disney World, and definitely hasn’t been the last. That was just the beginning of Travelmystories I just didn’t know it back then.

In some of the pictures we were at Universal Studios. Actually on that vacation we stayed at Central Florida for 3 weeks and we visited all the parks including Bush Garden in Tampa. My family always took us on vacation, but in Puerto Rico. We visited many places and stayed in different towns during our vacation. But this special one, was our first family vacation in the US. Thank God for cameras, and albums we have now great memories to re-live.
Where did you go on your first travel?
Until then,

Travel Partner

I am the kind of person that thinks that two is better than one. When you find that special person that you can partner with, to go shopping, to watch a movie, to talk, to live… to travel is like seen a complete picture. At least that is to me.

A partner could be a friend, a family member, or a pet. Maybe you could have different partners for different things. You might love to go walking at the park with your best friend because that way you exercises and talk at the same time, perfect package. That is your walking partner. But to travel you might want to be with the love of your life, to cherished those travel adventure together (like me :)). Or you like to travel with your sister because you understand each other or have the same interests. No matter who, the important is that you have somebody to enjoy life. We were design to be with others, we were design to partner with people, is the best way to live.
I am glad I found my partner! He is the best and the good part of it is that I like to do pretty much everything with him, specially travel :D.

Who is your travel partner?

Until then,

My Afternoon Trip to Lukas Nursery

Continuing with my search for things to do in my hometown of Central Florida I went to visit Lukas Nursery last Sunday afternoon. I have shared before with you that I am participating on butterflies surveys, but that doesn’t mean that I know butterflies. I am learning about them a little bit more now. I want to keep learning more about them, beside that I love to take pictures of them. I like to go back to the pictures and see the details of them that you can not notice when they fly by. If you pay attention and look closely them is like watching a little alien, or a beautiful monster.

I am a person of details, I think details are important to make something ordinary, unique. I like to apply that concept on everything, even when we talk about travel. The details of your travel are the ones that will make your experience unique.
Can you see the proboscis of this ⬆️ little fellow inside the flower? But it’s so little that if you don’t pay attention you won’t notice this magic event. I got some sugar juice in my finger and the little guy just jump to my finger to have a little taste. They taste by their feet!
This ⬇️ little guy is Atala and is very common in South Florida.

Let me introduced to you our Florida state butterfly:
Zebra longwing
Ok for the next butterfly I did a whole photo shoot out it! I had to follow it all over the place, of course very cautiously, to be able to take these pictures. Some of the pictures you will sense some kind of movement because it was moving a lot. It was flapping its giant wings while having a good meal.

But for a moment my little colorful friend stoped and stayed still. It spead its wings like in a perfect formation. I took advantage of
the perfect moment. The giant swallowtail is the largest butterfly in Canada and United States.
Did you notice that my butterfly “model” is missing a piece of the left bottom wing? This kind of details are the once that you can notice only when you pay attention.
To finish let’s enjoy the pretty color combination that the next two have with their close wings.

Polydamas Swallowtail ⬆️

Black Swallowtail ⬆️ These two did not want to open their wings for me…
That was pretty much my Sunday afternoon, chasing butterflies at Lukas Nursery Butterfly Encounter to take pictures of them.

Until then,
