Details of a Rainy Weekend at the Beach

When you go to the beach, specially if you are staying during a weekend, you want blue skies and a sunny warm day. You will love to have clear waters and I guess you want to be able to sunbathe a little, go to the water to cool off, maybe read a book and because every is so crispy and perfect you don’t have to worry about grey skies, wind, lightning or packing all your beach things in a few seconds because a mini storm is going to happen anytime while you are there. Right? We don’t want to deal with rain during our beach day, at least that is the way I am.

But few weekends back we had a reservation at a hotel in Belleair Beach and the weather did not cooperate at all for the perfect picture that we all want for a beach day. Instead we had grey skies all weekend and we constantly had to run back to the hotel because of rain and wind. In the short times when the rain stopped I did want I like the best… document and collect moments, beauty in simplicity.

Have you tried wind surfing?

I have not tried wind surfing, but I like to see other people doing it. I was just at the beach with my camera, capturing moments and photographing birds. Social distancing, but out enjoying the outdoors, the beach, the wind… Watching other people having fun and appreciating life, in a save way is nice! Is the best way to live in pandemic times.

The little things in life are big now, like just been outdoors and respecting others. Delight on the simple things, those bring peace.

Black Skimmers!

by Xamara L Maisonet

January 2017

I sat comfortably in my beach chair with sunglasses on,  ready for my “nothing to do day”. We were close to the shore line where the soft waves sooth the ambience noise.

Two peculiar bird flew by close to the water and shore line.  They caught my attention, but I was there for beach business so I continue to relax.  Few minutes later they were there again, two of them, one in front of the other. The birds were flying so low, almost touching the water. The duo passed by over and over again, they lifted their flight a little and continued flying until they disappear from my sight.  I never seen that kind of bird before. Their strange orange and black beak woke up my relax mode to alert mode. I notice that when they got close to the water, they skim the water with their lower beak. During the day I try numerous time to capture them in flight with my camera. I wanted to see the bird in details. To be honest, most of  my afternoon went by trying over and over to get pictures.

Scanning my pictures for details, I couldn’t find the birds eyes. I looked, I zoom, and there were no eyes! I thought to myself:

“Maybe they don’t have eyes? No! Impossible!”

At that moment, I wanted to take more pictures to  find the eyes of my flying friends. A little prayer asking them to stop flying won’t be a bad idea..  I wanted to meet the black and white feather creature in person,  a close encounter.

For my surprise my prayer request got answered. I was sitting on my beach chair again, looking diligently everywhere. Then,  I hear my husband calling,

“Xamara, hurry come here now! Hurry!”

I ran toward him and there it was, my friend stopped by to model for me.

Bird Fun, Fun Bird, Fun Shots

Ahhh the sun, the beach, the wildlife and my camera! A fun beach day won’t be complete without my camera. Diligently I am always in the look out for spontaneous and common moments that bring joy to my relax day. Some snowy egrets were close by me, and I could help my self, and I got my camera out.

Let me share one of my “fun moment” at the beach taking pictures of these cuties. I found them funny with their yellow feet and their rock and roll “hair” look.

Here you can see they are like soldiers waiting for a command, but in reality they are waiting for some fish that a boy is getting for them from his fishing net.

I love this picture, it’s so funny to my how he is so concentrated waiting for a fish. And what about his hair! It looks like he iron it.
Check out the close up. It’s so lean and narrow. Yellow eyes and long hair with a long black beak, what a guy!

More cool shots of my model of the day.

And it left. But I took a curious video of one of them trying to catch some food and it looks like it was dancing with the waves.
